Will you join me in some introspection?

There are leadership and management styles infiltrating our organisations, disengaging our people on a mass level and cutting down the human growth potential lying within, as we speak.

Martin Buber, an Austrian born philosopher characterised I-it and I-you relationships.

I-it relationships are created when we are in transactions with people whom we treat as objects, when we view others as simply there to serve us or complete a task.

I-you relationships are characterised by the opposite. Where our transactions are characterised by empathy and human connection.

Because we are hard wired for connection, disconnection always creates pain.

And when we encounter an I-it relationship approach from the people who lead us, this pain breeds loneliness, isolation, frustration and disengagement

Amidst the chaos, we can all be susceptible to the trap of these ‘other’ styles.

It requires vigilance and steady introspection to ward off the dangers of ignorance, arrogance and complacency that leads to

human potential that is ignored, stifled and wasted.

So, before we can start using a growth focused, COACH to GROW approach, we need to know what it is not.

Micromanaging ignores human potential

COACH to GROW is NOT micromanaging.

Micromanaging ignores human potential – it is the ultimate in command and control.
For those on the receiving end, it’s demoralising & counter-intuitive.
For those dishing it out, it’s exhausting and unfulfilling.
It’s an approach that isn’t scalable.

When you micro-manage, you are saying you don’t trust people to
make their own decisions
solve their own problems
produce great results

Autonomy is stripped away, and people are left to drown in a sea of procedures, processes and checkpoints

COACHING to GROW is squeezed out and human potential completely ignored.

Power Hoarding stifles human potential

COACH to GROW is NOT Power Hoarding. Power hoarding stifles human potential, it is the ultimate in secrecy and exclusion.
For those on the receiving end, it’s demeaning, disempowering and isolating.
For those dishing it out, it’s all consuming and lonely.

When left unchecked, it overruns all in its path ruining its host and everyone associated with it.
Power hoarding leaders don’t give their people visibility into the present let alone the future nor autonomy over contributing to the shaping of that present and future.
They hoard whatever information and ideas they acquire and dole it out in tiny doses and only when they see fit.

Missing in action wastes human potential

COACH to GROW is NOT Missing in Action

Missing in action Leaders waste human potential, it is the ultimate in negligence and inattention

For those on the receiving end its soul destroying and alienating.

For those dishing it out it’s destructive and unfulfilling.

By its very nature, absentee leaders are silent organisation killers. Being ignored by one’s manager or leader can be more alienating that being treated poorly.

It’s the leader who doesn’t know how to lead, doesn’t care or simply won’t make the time for it

Cancelled meetings, unanswered emails, zero feedback, absolutely no check ins.

The offences range from annoying to stunting And it borders on bullying

What do you think about Missing in Action?

So now we’ve journeyed the path of destruction and desolation. We’ve visited three quadrants of ‘other’ management styles and now we arrive at the top right quadrant, where leaders and organisations who effortlessly lead to grow others, reside
The darker side of the journey though unpleasant, has value and merit. It’s through shining a light on our flaws that the pathway to our strengths and shared humanity can be revealed.

With the onslaught of digital transformation job automaton & the reskilling imperative we need leadership change NOW


We need leaders who


– embrace new technologies confidently and
– support human capability compassionately


and do so in equal measure.
